Split stolica Dalmacji
Split będący stolicą Dalmacji jest drugim pod względem wielkości miastem w Chorwacji. Wprawdzie liczba ludności oscylująca w granicy 200 tysięcy może nie robi oszałamiającego wrażenia, ale w tutejszych warunkach uważana jest za znaczącą metropolię. Największą atrakcją turystyczną tego dalmackiego miasta jest Pałac Dioklecjana, a właściwie jego pozostałości. Cesarski Pałac był tak ogromny, że obecnie zajmuje całą starówkę. Niestety większości murów dziś już nie widać, gdyż zostały najzwyczajniej zabudowane przez inne budowle. Ciekawostką jest to, że dawne korytarze i komnaty tej wielkiej rezydencji letniej Dioklecjana obecnie stanowią uliczki i pomniejsze placyki starówki.
Historia Splitu
Niezwykle ważna jest tutaj historia tego miasta. Gdy Salona – bo taka jest rzymska nazwa Splitu, została podczas wojen niemalże zrównana z ziemią, większość mieszkańców miasta zdecydowała się przenieść na teren pałacu, którego strzegły potężne fortyfikacje. Z czasem pałac zamienił się w małe miasto. W miejscu, gdzie wcześniej były cesarskie komnaty powstały domy, a korytarze zamieniły się w ruchliwe ulice.
Split oferuje także inne atrakcje turystyczne. Najbardziej znane z nich to: brama pałacowa Porta Aurea, mauzoleum Dioklecjana przebudowane na katedrę Św. Duji, świątynia Jupitera, pozostałości dawnego akweduktu, perystyl i westybul, kościół św. Franciszka oraz rozliczne zabytkowe kościoły znajdujące się poza murami miasta. Warto zwiedzić także znajdujące się na terenie miasta muzea oraz skarbiec pod katedrą.
Decydując się jednak na Split trzeba wiedzieć, że jest to dość ciasne miasto. Samochodów, zarówno mieszkańców, jak i tych wypożyczonych przez turystów jest mnóstwo, a parkingów bardzo mało. Często można natknąć się także na korki. W związku z tym wjazd pod samą starówkę graniczy niemalże z cudem. Warto więc zatrzymać się w dalszej odległości od historycznego centrum i zafundować sobie spacer wśród wąskich uliczek, gdzie można zatrzymać się na śródziemnomorski posiłek i lampkę chorwackiego wina.
